DO Trim
Giving yourself a “tidy-up” trim before your appointment is recommended. Trimming back or allowing regrowth from one-half to one inch makes it easier for the wax to grip the hairs.
Under no circumstances, ever, is it okay to shave before your appointment. Tempting as it may be, we’re going to need you to put down the razor and back away slowly.
Can Your Hair Be Too Long for a Brazilian Wax?
Yes! If you’re currently donning a full-grown set of “down there” locks, you’ll definitely want to trim it back to half of an inch up to one inch.
You can use clean hair trimming shears or hair clippers to achieve this length.
DON’T Shave
After shaving, the hair grows back at different lengths, it’s coarser and sharper, and you may end up with ingrown hairs. We said it once, we’ll say it again, ditch the razor!
After you’ve had your first Brazilian, your hair will grow back at the same rate and will come in finer, softer, and easier to wax on subsequent visits.
What Happens If You Shave Before Your Brazilian Wax Appointment?
If your emotional attachment to your razor caused you to shave, you’ll likely need to reschedule your appointment to ensure your hair is the right length. Shaving can also cause irritation and chafing — neither goes well with a Brazilian wax.
So, if you happen to oopsy and pick up that razor before your appointment, reschedule and let the hair grow back to the recommended length for the best results.
DO Moisturize and Exfoliate
Exfoliating one to two days before your appointment will help open the follicles and clear away dead skin build-up, making hair removal easier and somewhat less painful.
Take a warm bath or shower — this will soften the skin — and using a dry brush or an exfoliating cleanser, gently exfoliate the area.
DON’T Irritate the Skin
Waxing will leave you with some redness and irritation for a day or two. The last thing you want for your most tender bits is more pain and irritation.
If your skin is irritated from shaving or chemical hair removal creams, you should definitely hold off on adding a wax to the mix. Razor burn, ingrown hairs, and rashes are never a good mix with waxing.
DON’T Get a Tan
This goes for both before and after your waxing session. Stay out of the sun or tanning beds for 48 hours before your appointment because your skin will be especially sensitive.
The likelihood of irritation to the skin increases substantially after the area has been tanned, even if you have no visible burns.
It’s best to let your skin rest after sun exposure and hold off on that wax until you’ve given the skin time to recover.
DO Take an Ibuprofen Before Your Appointment if You Are Worried About Pain
If you’re still feeling nervous about potential pain, take the recommended dose of two ibuprofen 30-45 minutes before your appointment. Not only will this take the edge off, but ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory, so it may help reduce swelling on the first day.
DON’T Be Nervous
Like many things in this crazy life, the anticipation is often worse than the actual event — the same is true with Brazilian waxing.
One of the best things you can do to prepare for a Brazilian wax, especially if it’s your first time, is to chill out. Let’s face it, if Brazilian waxing was really THAT bad, no one would do it.
If you think you’ll need something to help reduce the anxiety, bring along a stress ball or play some relaxing music on your way to your appointment. Take comfort in knowing that we want you to come back, so we’ll do everything possible to avoid making the experience traumatic.
